Remove the latest update
If the update contains no features that are critical for further work on the computer, you can simply undo the latest update that caused the VPN to fail. To do this, run the following sequence of commands:
- Open the Settings app.
- Select Update & Security in it.
- In the new window select Windows Update and click View update history.
- In the window that opens, find and click Uninstall updates.
- A window will appear with a list of all updates. It's a good idea to sort them by the date they were installed so you can see the whole list.
- Select the most recently installed packages and click the Uninstall button.
- When the process finishes, you need to restart the PC and try to connect the VPN.
A second way to solve the problem is to roll back to the previous Windows build that worked fine before the update. This is possible if the latest update was installed 10–30 days ago; the exact number of days depends on the version of the operating system. To do this, take the following steps:
• Open the Settings app.
• Find Update & Security in it, then the Recovery section.
• In the block that opens, select Go back to the previous version of Windows 10.
• Click the Get started button.
• You'll have to choose a reason for performing the command (any one will do).
The rollback to the previous state will take some time, during which the computer will restart automatically. Before starting the rollback, keep in mind that any settings made after the update will also be removed.
Recreate the connection
If the VPN problem isn't related to major changes in the structure of the operating system, you can get it working again simply by recreating the connection. To do this, just run these commands:
• Open the Settings app.
• Go to the Network & Internet menu item.

Sometimes the updated IPv6 network protocol conflicts with the server, with the result that the VPN can't connect to the provider's server. If you disable it and leave only the IPv4 protocol, the connection may be restored. To do this, you need to:
• Press the Win+R key combination, which brings up the Run dialog for quick command entry.
• In the command line, type ncpa.cpl and click OK.
• In the window that opens, right-click your VPN network adapter and select Properties from the menu that appears.
• In the new window, open the Networking tab and clear the Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) checkbox.
• Click OK and then restart the computer.
Reinstall network devices
When updating the Windows 10 operating system, it sometimes happens that network devices stop working properly. If that's the case, there's no need to give up on updates altogether, since they may contain a lot of useful things. You can fix the problem simply by reinstalling the WAN Miniport network adapters. This is done by running the following commands:
- Open the Device Manager menu item by bringing up the Start button's context menu (right-click it).
- Expand the Network adapters line, and on the first device in the list labeled WAN Miniport, right-click.
- In the context menu select Uninstall device.
- Do the same with all the other WAN Miniport adapters listed in the menu.
- Select the Action menu item at the top of the window.
- In the menu select Scan for hardware changes. Another option is simply to restart the PC.
After restarting, try connecting the VPN again; if the problem was with the network devices, it should be resolved.
