VPN Connection Errors

The main task of any VPN service is to create a secure connection that helps you visit blocked resources. Such a connection is called a VPN tunnel, which links a specific user and a remote server. This is a fairly complex technology that requires special knowledge and equipment.
If the program fails, this is a VPN connection error, which is reported to the user immediately. This message usually contains a code indicating the type of failure, which makes the further work of fixing it easier.

Since most VPN errors are typical, with certain information the user can fix the problem on their own. It is important to note that many providers automatically introduce procedural codes that fix the issues and malfunctions that arise. But there is a certain list that requires the user's direct intervention to resolve a specific problem.

Error Codes and Ways to Solve the Problem

When the VPN software fails, the system displays a message about it, returning a specific error code. Each of the returned codes allows you to carry out certain procedures that, with a high probability, solve the problems.

VPN Error 800

Describes one of the most common problems. This code is returned when the program failed to establish a remote connection with the server. This indicates that, for some reason, the request is not reaching the server. This situation can arise for several reasons:

  • An incorrectly specified server name or virtual address.
  • The installation of network firewalls; some of them simply block VPN traffic.
  • Loss of connection to the local network.
  • When using an L2TP/IPSec tunnel, an unsuitable format of IPSec negotiations in the security parameters configuration.

This happens when the VPN tunnel has automatic settings, in which case it fails to recreate the connection for all the tunnels being formed.
Solution:
When connecting, check all parameters, including the server address, login and password.
It is better not to use a firewall, or to configure it in such a way that the transit of PPTP and/or VPN is allowed.

VPN Errors 609 and 633

When a non-existent device type is specified, error 609 is returned, and in the case where the connection is already in use or used incorrectly, error 633 is shown. These are similar problems that arise when miniports are configured incorrectly or when the TCP port is used by other programs. To confirm problems with the miniport, you need to detect its presence; to do this, the command netcfg.exe -q is entered at the command prompt. The following miniports are used for different tunnels:

  • MS_PPTP for the PPTP tunnel.
  • MS_L2TP for the L2TP tunnel.
  • MS_AGILEVPN for the VPN reconnect tunnel (IKEv2).
  • MS_SSTP for the SSTP tunnel.

Solution:

  • Use the built-in Windows diagnostics if there is an indication of a missing miniport. The operating system's utility can fix the problem that has arisen automatically.
  • Install and use the miniport connection manager for VPN access.
  • Restart the computer or gadget, then connect to the VPN again.

VPN Error 0x80072746

This code is returned by the system when an already working connection is forcibly closed by the remote host. The causes of the problem are that the computer certificate is not bound to the VPN server, or such a certificate is simply not installed on this server.
Solution:
Get in touch with the administration of the company providing the VPN service. They will provide information on whether the computer certificate is installed on the VPN server.
If the certificate is installed correctly, to perform the HTTPS binding you need to enter the command netsh http show ssl at the command prompt of the VPN server.

VPN Error 809

Code 809 is returned by the system if the computer failed to establish a connection with the VPN server, which does not respond to requests.
Solution:
Open the port on the router or firewall. If that does not work, you can deploy an SSTP tunnel on the server and on the computer, and use it to restore the connection.

VPN Error 13801

This is one of the most common error codes, which indicates that the IKE credentials are invalid. It arises in the following cases:
Expiration of the certificate on the RAS server.
The validation certificate used for IKEv2 on the RAS server does not have the «Server Authentication» Extended Key Usage (EKU) function.
The absence on the client of a root certificate that validates the RAS server's certificate.
The name of the selected VPN server specified on the client does not match the subject of the server certificate.
Solution:
This issue can only be resolved by contacting the administration of the VPN provider.

VPN Error 691

The VPN error code 691 indicates that the remote connection was denied. The cause is an unrecognized combination of the login and password provided to the provider, or the active protocol is not supported by the remote server.
Solution:

  • Make sure the entered login and password are correct. It often happens that something as small as a pressed Caps Lock leads to the error.
  • Make sure that the protocol set on the user's side is supported on the server.

VPN Error 0x800704C9

This code is returned in the case where the server does not have an available SSTP port.
Solution:
To fix the error, you need to make sure the RAS server has enough ports configured for operation. To do this, you need to:

  • Launch Routing and Remote Access.
  • Expand the server, select Ports with the right mouse button and, from the context menu, select Properties.
  • Find the WAN Miniport (SSTP), click it, then click Configure.
  • In the Maximum ports field, set the desired number and click OK. The default number of ports is 128.
  • In the Port Properties window, also click OK.

VPN Error 789

This code is returned on a failed L2TP connection due to an error accessing the remote computer.
Solution:
You need to make sure that both the user's side and the provider use the correct L2TP/IPSec connection certificate. The same must be done when using a Pre-Shared Key (PSK).

Sometimes, in addition to specific steps, general recommendations help solve VPN error problems:

  1. Restart the device and connect to the VPN provider again.
  2. Check the operation of antivirus programs and, if necessary, temporarily disable them.
  3. Change the VPN server. The one being requested may be unavailable or overloaded.
  4. Incorrect time settings on the device can lead to connection problems.

As we can see, there are no unsolvable problems; if nothing helps, you can contact the VPN provider's technical support service. As a last resort, simply switch from an unreliable provider.
